Cemetery Secrets: DIY Halloween Tombstones

Creating easy gravestones with styrofoam grave stones, fake moss, and fake grass is a fun and affordable Halloween or spooky-themed decoration project. Here's a step-by-step outline to guide you through the process:

Materials Needed:

  1. Styrofoam grave stones (available at the dollar store or craft store)

  2. Fake moss (also available at craft stores or online)

  3. Fake grass or turf (found at craft stores or garden centers)

  4. Craft knife or scissors

  5. Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  6. Acrylic paint (gray, black, brown) and paintbrushes (optional, for aging effect)

  7. Small decorative elements (e.g., plastic spiders, faux chains, Halloween decorations - optional)

Steps:

Preparation:

  • Lay out your workspace with a protective covering (newspapers or plastic) to catch any mess.

  • Ensure you have all your materials handy.

Assemble the Gravestones:

  • If your styrofoam grave stones have multiple pieces (base and top piece), assemble them according to the instructions, if any.

  • If the grave stones are not freestanding, you may need to create a base for them using more styrofoam or cardboard.

Aging Effect (Optional):

  • If you want your gravestones to look weathered and old, you can paint them with acrylic paint. Start with a base coat of gray, and then add some black and brown in random areas for a stone-like appearance.

  • Let the paint dry completely.

Adding Moss and Grass:

  • Use the hot glue gun to attach fake moss to the surface of the grave stones. Apply the glue to the back of the moss and press it onto the styrofoam. You can cover the entire surface or apply it strategically to give a weathered look.

  • Add patches of fake grass or turf around the base of the gravestones to mimic a graveyard setting. Secure it with hot glue.

Decorate (Optional):

  • If you have any small decorative elements like plastic spiders, faux chains, or other spooky Halloween decorations, you can glue them onto the gravestones or around the area for an extra eerie effect.

Display:

  • Find a suitable spot to display your finished gravestones, whether it's in your yard, on your porch, or as part of an indoor Halloween display.

Storage:

  • When Halloween is over, carefully remove the fake moss and grass if you plan to reuse the styrofoam grave stones. Store them in a dry, cool place to ensure they last for future use.

Remember to exercise caution while using hot glue guns, and supervise children if they're involved in the project. Enjoy creating your spooky graveyard scene!
